| Title | Letter from Lord Robert Montagu, Inverness Terrace [London], to his brother, the Duke of Manchester |
| Description | Lord Derby has offered to appoint him Vice President of the Council but is in doubt due to rumours about future policies. He wishes to run down to seek Manchester's advice but is laid up with a cold. Please send an answer saying whether he could honestly take office. With the Duke's reply, written the same day: He has confidence in Lord Derby and is sure he would not propose any reform that was not necessary. He suggests asking Derby what his proposals are before agreeing as he wouldn't want to accept office and then find himself unable to agree with Cabinet. |
