| Description | Is glad that Bigmore is to be appointed to the staff. In the light of Colonel Hay's account of him, thinks that the opportunity of engaging Henry Baxter should not be lost: he will be most useful if he is a fit and efficient drill. Will arrange about a man occupying Worley's room as it is desirable that someone should be near the arms at night. Attached: 1) Letter Charles W. Hay, St. George's Barracks, to 7th Earl of Sandwich. Recommends Henry Baxter for the vacant post of Serjeant in the Hunts Militia. Baxter has served 20 years and 4 months in my Battalion and is a good looking, active and intelligent man of excellent character. 11th October, 1853 2) Letter Charles W. Hay, Horse Guards, to 7th Earl of Sandwich. Henry Baxter was never a serjeant in the Battalion because there were more eligible men to appoint, but he is smart and intelligent and writes well. He is 40 years and 4 months old. He is not qualified to be a pay serjeant as he has no experience. He would be a very fit man to drill recruits. 15th October, 1853 |
