Description | Deals with the work of the Huntingdonshire National Service Committee. (The National Service Committees began to be set up at the end of 1938 and were responsible to the National Service Department of the Ministry of Labour. Their functions were to encourage and coordinate recruitment at a local level for national service, civil or military. The 9th Earl of Sandwich as Lord Lieutenant and Chairman of the County Council, was appointed President and Chairman of the Huntingdonshire committee). The file includes letters dealing with the routine business of the committee; these are mainly between Lord Sandwich and Mr F.M. Dunwoody, a Ministry of Labour official who was appointed secretary to the Huntingdonshire committee. There is also a signed letter from Mr.Ernest Brown, Minister of Labour (22nd Nov. 1939). There are also agendas and minutes of the meetings of the county committee and its General Purposes Committee: reports of the secretary to the county committee: interim reports of the county committee to the Minister of Labour: schedules showing the requirements and enrolments in the county for the A.R.P., police, fire and nursing services: lists of the members of the county committee: memoranda circulars and notes issued by the Ministry of Labour: newspaper cuttings about the county committee. |
