Description | The series of enrolled inclosure awards and maps deposited with the Clerk of the Peace is far from complete and includes many copy awards and maps collected at a later date. The various awards (some enrolled, some copies, some modern typescript copies) were bound into a series of volumes in the 1960s by the Clerk to Huntingdon and Peterborough County Council before being deposited with the Record Office (the CCS series). For a list of these see the Inclosure Records handlist in the seachroom. The inclosure acts are in a similarly confused state. In theory, the Clerk of the Peace's papers concerning inclosure were classified with an 'HCP/6' reference, but in practice early archivists used this as a dumping ground for inclosure papers from many other sources (eg Manchester Collection, Thornhill Collection, various solicitors etc.), and included some non-inclosure records too (mainly drainage and charity records). Philip Saunders has recently gone through HCP/6 ascertaining where individual items have come from. |
