DescriptionWeekly cost per head for food 2/1½. Cost in 1850 of clothing and bedding £1-0-2¾ per head. Work - treadwheel crank machine and capstan. In separate confinement shoemaking, tailoring, and assorting corn. Females washing, mending and occasionally at crank machine. Hours 10 in summer, 8 in winter. Association - to a limited extent at the tread wheel, but silence is enjoined. Little restriction on association among the women. commodious infirmaries are provided for the sick Debtors and untried female prisoners are unemployed. Disobedience of prison rules punished by solitary confinement - whipping for damage to a cell. A system of solitary confinement had been introduced on May 27th, 1850 and 137 prisoners were already so disciplined. The number of punishments for prison offences had decreased by ¼ compared with the period of associated treadwheel labour.
