TitleSummary Gaol report: visiting justices, Surgeon, Chaplin, Gaoler and Gaoler's certificate.
Description(1) The Chaplain, Henry Augustus Maule, states that the object of punishment is not only deterrent but also reformative and, from 6 or 7 years experience, he has learnt that long terms of imprisonment fail to amend the prisoner who becomes habituated to gaol routine and is corrupted by his fellow-prisoners. This is true in the case of adults, it applies with double force to juvenile delinquents especially where they are not sentenced to hard labour.
(2) Gaoler's reports - good conduct of prisoners except William Bright, Thomas Lyon, William Grove and John Smith.
(3) Report of the Surgeon, Jonah Wilson - health of prisoners good except for Thomas Denny (slight smallpox but he was isolated and soon recovered. Other prisoners vaccinated) Edward Redhead fractured a bone in his leg, getting off the treadmill.
