TitleCastle House, Leighton Bromswold (formerly 'The Gatehouse'). Historical note forming part of the particulars reads: 'The gatehouse was built in 1616 by Sir Gervase Clifton as the gatehouse to a castle he intended to build to a John Thorpe design. The castle was however, never built, Sir Gervase Clifton was sent to the Tower of London by James I for publicly declaring he wished he had killed Sir Francis Bacon.' [The gatehouse was converted into the vicarage in 1904 when 'the great arches were closed in and a floor was inserted across the carriage way' (VCH, vol.III, p.87, which contains several other paragraphs about the scheme and architectural changes)]
