TitleAssociation of ARP officers: general I
DescriptionSurgeon Commander A.S.G. Bell, the ARP officer for Huntingdonshire, was the hon. secretary of the Association of ARP officers, a national organisation of ARP officers, some of whom were chief constables. The commencing letters in this file are concerned with an invitation sent out by Commander Bell to ARP officers countrywide, inviting them to join the association. This took place in 1937/1938. It appears that it was established by the beginning of 1938 and that its objects were, in the main, the pooling of ideas. There are a number of letters arranging meetings of the association. There was an annual subscription of 10 shillings. It appears that some counties, and, surprisingly, the larger ones, who later on suffered from heavy bombing, were not interested joining the association. The matters talked about were gas masks, the responsibility of surveyors in air raids, gas proof rooms, air raid wardens. Their experience would be based on the 1914-1948 War and the war in Spain, and the majority of the officers appeared to be ex-service. It seems that by July 1938, the association was well established and was dealing with a large number of applications for membership. (Note: An enormous amount of work must have gone into getting the association formed and active, but it appears that as the reality of war got nearer, so enthusiasm and attendance at meetings fell off, and it was wound up at the end of August 1939, just before the outbreak of war.)
