DescriptionInitially the Home Guard was called the Local Volunteer Defence Corps, which was recruited in 1940 when the danger of invasion by German forces was imminent. The early circulars and correspondence on this file refer to the Local Volunteer Defence Corps or Force. Instruction No. 6 1940. Relations between the civil defence services and the Local Defence Volunteers. Scheme for mutual assistance between ARP and LDV. Correspondence on use of ARP ambulances for Home Guard casualties. Correspondence on ‘town commanders’ and lists. Lists of towns and villages in Home Guard Company areas. Decontamination of Home Guard clothing. Long letter from regional commissioner to controllers, civil defence and the Home Guard. Secret letter from office of the regional commissioner. Civil defence and the Home Guard. This file also contains correspondence between Colonel M.D. Barkley (Lord Sandwich’s agent) and Colonel C.W.D. Rowe who had both served in the First World War and were well known and highly respected in Huntingdon and Peterborough. Colonel Barkley commanded the Huntingdon section of the Home Guard, Colonel Rowe that of North Huntingdonshire and Peterborough.
