DescriptionThe Public Health Committee, originally known as the Sanitary Committee until 1899 and combined with the Sanatorium Committee in 1899, met monthly or more regularly if business dictated, to discuss issues effecting the public health of the borough. Issues discussed and resolved included the appointment of officers such as the Medial Officer of Health, a Medical Officer of Health for schools, the Inspector of Nuisances and the Chief Sanitary Inspector. Reports were heard from these officers regarding incidents of public health concern such as overcrowding, nuisances, and inadequate drains and the Matron of the Infectious diseases hospital gave a regular report including statistics on admissions, discharges, and the nature of the disease. The effect of new Public health or medical legislation was analysed. Tenders for supplies, works and maintenance at the cemetery, pumping station, prison and hospitals. Issues discussed relating to the Infectious disease hospital often included lists of patients treated; staffing issues such as holidays, appointments, and compensation claims; inquiries into complaints regarding patient treatment; appointment of visitors to the hospital; and the provision of entertainment. Further issues regularly appearing in the minutes include reports on certain admissions to Addenbrokes; petitions and memorials from inhabitants; reports on the spread of disease; reports on housing conditions; closing houses deemed unfit for habitation; demolition orders; the provision of water and sewage to properties; provision of public toilets; issuing slaughterhouse licences; and the analysis of suspect food products.
