TitleFreedom of the Borough granted to volunteers from the South African Campaign
DescriptionThis file contains material relating to the selection of volunteers returning from the South African war to be honoured by the town by receiving the freedom of the Borough. The celebrations for the day included a march through the town, a thanks giving service at Great St Mary's church, a special meeting of the town council where the honouree Freedom of the Borough will be conferred, followed by a public banquet and presentation of silver stoups. The file comprises papers relating to the qualifications for the honour, correspondence recommending individuals for the award, lists of subscribers to the volunteers welcome fund, lists of those to receive the honour, seating plans for the special council meeting, copies of tickets, handbills and public notices, a menu for the banquet and souvenir issues of the Cambridge Review, The Cambridge Graphic, and the Cambridge Chronicle with an articles relating to Cambridge University men in times of war.
