TitleCharles P Harris claim for compensation
DescriptionCharles P Harris was town clerk from 1830 until 1835. He was removed from office under provisions of the 1835 Municipal Corporations Act and sought compensation from the council for the loss of this office and that of Clerk of the Peace. This series also consists of records which document the removal of GB White, Charles Harris's predecessor, from the office of town clerk due to a suspicion of forgery relating to the entry of a baptism in the Linton Parish register and his subsequent disappearance from Cambridge; CH Cooper case that he acted as the deputy clerk in the absence of GB White; the ruling of the Lords of the Treasury in the compensation case; and an appeal by the Corporation. The series comprises legal cases for opinions on multiple aspects of the case, extracts from the Common Day book and council minutes, correspondence, and financial estimates on the profitability of the offices over the course of three years to assess the amount of annuity due. [Formerly marked as bundle 110] Harris was reappointed clerk in 1840 serving until his death in 1849.
