DescriptionBundle of legal papers concerning the Commissioners of Sewers for Wisbech's claim that John Chicheley and Nathanial Kinderley have blocked the Wisbech River with a dam, and made a new cut under the west bank to divert the waters. They also claim that the new cut is too narrow, and will cause the lands on either side to flood during the winter months. This case was heard in the Court of Chancery in June 1723. Contains copies of the bill of complaint; the draft plea of the Bedford Level Corporation against the bill; the answers of the Corporation to the bill of complaint; draft interrogatories; draft petitions of the Corporation for the case to be adjourned until May; petition of the relators for the case to be heard in February; venire facias [served] to the Corporation; draft legal briefs for the defendants; affidavits of John Philips, Henry Bates, John Cantrell and Nathanial Kinderley; certificate of the Commissioners as to the examination of witnesses; orders to prove the veracity of certain documents exhibited at the trial; minutes of the proceedings in the Court of Chancery and other notes.
