TitleHuntingdonshire County Council v Leonard T. Simpson
DescriptionBundle of legal papers concerning Huntingdonshire County Council's claim that Leonard Simpson had dismantled St Ives Staunch and made the River Ouse above it unnavigable. They claimed that the River Ouse was a public navigation, and as such should be kept open at all times. Leonard Simpson originally purchased the navigation with his brother in 1893, but subsequently closed it in 1897 in response to not being permitted to charge a toll, and after the lock gates were damaged three times by the Corporation of Godmanchester. The case sought to establish whether there was a right of public navigation on the River Ouse, and also whether Simpson was liable to maintain the staunch. This case eventually reached the House of Lords in 1904, who decided that Simpson did have the right to close the locks.
