"The collection, which includes over a hundred private letters, revolves for the most part around Richard Cromwell, successor as Protector to his father, Oliver, and many of the printed items were probably collected by him. From the family point of view the most interesting part of the collection is the series of letters written by him to his daughter Elizabeth during the years following the Restoration, when she was living at Hursley, in Hampshire, while he was leading a very retired life with the Pengellys at Cheshunt in Bucks [sic; in Herts; c. 1685-1705]. By the student of 17th century history, however, more importance would be attached to the documents concerning the residence in Ireland of Henry Cromwell, brother of Richard and Lord Deputy of Ireland 1657-59, and the few letters and papers referring to the Monmouth Rebellion. The manorial items include rentals and conveyances of estates in Leicestershire, Pembroke, Hampshire, Cambridgeshire and Middlesex at one time or another in the possession of members of the Cromwell family. The collection is completed by a number of 17th century public papers and printed materials, and materials for pedigrees of the family as far as the year 1817, in the time of the last Oliver Cromwell. From him the collection passed via Elizabeth Oliveria Cromwell Russell into the Bush family, where it still remains...."
